I am the daughter of a conductor from Cologne. He played with his dance band in the pre-war time in Niederbreisig during the season.

Here he met my mother. They became acquainted and fell in love. She descended from an old-established family of landlords.

Some of her and thus of my ancestors and family members are close connected to the history of today’s town of Bad Breisig.

It goes without saying that I have had an affinity for the fine arts and good food since my earliest youth, and at some point my love of beautiful furnishings, quirky things and an interest in local history was added to this.

I gave myself the villa as a present for my 50th birthday. It was the fulfilment of my childhood dream of running a bed & breakfast. Of course, I preferred to stay in Italy at the time, but the house and I have remained in my homeland.

The design and furnishing of the current “Villa zur Erholung” has given me, as an architect, great pleasure, despite some of the effort involved.

Favorite places

I hope you enjoy your stay in my Bed & Breakfst! If you are interested, I will be happy to tell you more stories about the villa, the place or my favourite places in the area or far away, for example:

Festung Ehrenbreitstein

Koblenz-Ehrenbreitstein

A later Prussian fortress that has existed since the 16th century, opposite the “German Corner”, where the Moselle flows into the Rhine.

Sie liegt auf dem gleichnamigen 180 m hohen Bergsporn und galt u. a. durch ihre topographische Lage als uneinnehmbar.

Was uns heute zu Gute kommt,
denn der Ausblick ist ein Traum und die wechselnden Ausstellungen immer wieder interessant!

Kulumba

The Art Museum of the Archdiocese of Cologne.

Architect:
Peter Zumthor

The new presentations of the museum’s own collection change every year. The constant juxtaposition of old and contemporary art creates a dialogue between past and present.
Peter Zumthor’s architecture blends unobtrusively with the exhibits.

This museum is always worth a visit!

Bruder Klaus Feldkapelle

Mechernich-Wachendorf
Eifel

Architect:
Peter Zumthor

A pentagonal monolith made of rammed earth, whose inner formwork of spruce trunks, was burnt out by a charcoal fire.

You enter the tent-shaped interior through a triangular door, which is open at the top. The otherwise windowless building is lit at certain points by glass blocks in the openings of the formwork webs. The floor is made of tin lead.

The chapel, built using traditional construction methods and local building materials
is a special one and makes everyone feel reverent.

Hessisches Landesmuseum

Darmstadt

One of the oldest public museums in Germany

Darmstadt

A universal museum with an extensive collection from different areas.

The art and natural history collection was established in the 17th century.

Today’s collection covers the fields of natural history, archaeology, art and arts and crafts, from the Middle Ages to modern times.

There are also special and temporary exhibitions.

Mathildenhöhe

If Darmstadt,
then too…

The Darmstadt artists’ colony was founded in 1899 and from 1900 onwards, the development of renowned Art Nouveau artists led to its current form.

In 2021, the Mathildenhöhe
was awarded world heritage status by unesco.

It’s always been my favourite place. I like to visit less well-known destinations, of which there are many!

Here is just a tiny overview.

Vicenza
The town of Palladio.

I am married to the art dealer Dr Thomas Schmitz-Avila, and our two sons Lennart and Julian also run an art dealership. Much of my furniture and accessories come from there.
